Grade 10 student Melissa Kakayuk won her second senior girls basketball MVP trophy in a row, earning the Bess Ferguson Trophy at the close of a highly successful season that saw the team win multiple titles.
The award and others were presented at the Winter Athletic Assembly held at Centenary Church on Wednesday, March 22.
“Melissa is the rare player who can take over the game,” said Coach Erik Van Dyke. “She is so athletic, strong and talented, she imposes her will on the game.”
Melissa, who was co-MVP last basketball season, was also awarded a Major S award for her efforts.
Chaz Grenier, Grade 11, won the E.C. Amaron Trophy for excellence in senior boys basketball as well as a Major S. This was his second Major S of the year, having won one for soccer in the fall.
“Chaz is a beast, he’s a machine, he’s incredibly dedicated. He’s coachable and intelligent and tough as nails,” said Coach Glen Faucher. “Chaz was the heart and soul of our team.”
Karel Préfontaine, Grade 12, earned her first Major S for varsity girls hockey as well as the Dugie Ross MVP Trophy.
“She is the most prolific player who ever donned a Spartans jersey,” said Assistant Coach Karina Guerrera of the four-year veteran. “She is ranked the third-best player of her age in the world, but despite the accolades, she carries herself with humility and professionalism.”
Logan Sawyer, a first-year Spartan in Grade 11, won a Major S and the Dawes MVP Trophy for varsity boys hockey.
“He constantly brought people to their feet,” said Coach Matt Thompson. “Logan Sawyer was our cheat code.”
Rachel Chan won a Major S for swimming and shared the Trustees’ MVP Cup with Jérôme Sayeur, who also earned a Senior S for his efforts.
“Rachel dominated the pool,” said Coach Shawn Belknap-Keet. “Her races were won by such a margin that I almost felt guilty cheering her on.” He also described Jérôme as a model athlete.
Rosalie Tremblay, Grade 9, won her second MVP trophy of the year as well as a Senior S award for prep girls hockey. She was a Major S winner and MVP co-winner for senior girls soccer in the fall.
The prep boys hockey MVP trophy and a senior S went to Jacob Leblanc, Grade 10.
Other Major S winners were Sara Paquette (senior girls basketball); Shun Hatano (senior boys basketball); Krystine Breton and Lea Matoush-St-Cyr (volleyball); Braden Chastanet (squash); Thomas LeBlanc (curling); Raphael Tellier and Spencer Hughes (varsity boys hockey); Alice Sauriol, Emma Kreisz, Élodie Roy, Béatrice Perron-Roy and Arianne Leblanc (varsity girls hockey).
